Dog Obedience Training Classes
Professional Dog Obedience & Puppy Training Classes
Over 40 Years of Experience Led by Master Dog Trainer Roger Richards
What is Dog Obedience Training?
Professional Dog Obedience Training helps dogs develop reliable manners, better communication, and greater confidence in everyday situations. At Toronto K9 Center, our obedience training programs have helped puppies and adult dogs throughout Whitby, Toronto, Durham Region, and the GTA learn essential commands, improve behavior, and build stronger relationships with their owners for over 40 years.
For instance, ‘drop it’ is essential for safety, ensuring your dog releases anything harmful or valuable. ‘Down’ is useful for calming and controlling your dog in various situations. ‘Leave it’ teaches your dog to ignore unwanted items or food, which is quite helpful during walks. Also, commands like shake, ‘roll over,’ and ‘play dead’ add an element of play and can reinforce the bond between you and your K9. Each command serves a purpose, whether it’s for safety, discipline, or simply having fun together.
Our Dog Obedience Training service areas include Toronto, Ajax, Whitby, Brooklin, Pickering, Oshawa, Hamilton, Brampton, and the GTA.
Why Dog Obedience Training Matters
Dog obedience training is about much more than teaching commands. Proper training creates a foundation of trust, communication, and respect between a dog and its owner. A well-trained dog is safer around people, easier to manage in public, more reliable off leash, and better equipped to handle everyday distractions.
Whether you own a puppy, family companion, working dog, or personal protection dog, obedience training is the foundation upon which all advanced training is built.
Puppy Training and Adult Dog Training Classes
Dog Training Is More Than Teaching Commands
As Roger Richards says, “Dog Obedience Training or Dog Behavior Training is not a science…it is an art.”
Dog Obedience Training and Dog Behavioural Training require timing, consistency, repetition, patience, and a genuine commitment to your dog’s well-being. Under the right guidance, even a first-time dog owner can achieve a high level of obedience and control in only a few lessons. Many owners wonder why their dog listens well at home but struggles to focus when faced with distractions in public. The answer is often a lack of communication, consistency, and real-world training experience.
Toronto K9 Center’s obedience training programs help strengthen communication between you and your dog, which is often the root cause of many behavioural issues. Dogs struggling with reactivity, fear, lunging, or excessive barking may benefit from our Reactive Dog Training programs. Our proven training methods teach dogs to understand and respond reliably to commands while helping owners develop the skills needed to maintain long-term success.
Puppy Training and Puppy Foundation
The early months of a puppy’s life are critical for learning and development. Our Puppy Training and Puppy Foundation programs help build a strong foundation of obedience, confidence, socialization, and communication skills that will influence your dog’s behaviour for years to come. Early experiences help shape how a puppy interacts with people, other dogs, and the world around them.
If you have completed an obedience course but still cannot reliably control your dog when off leash, the training has not fully achieved its goal. Effective obedience training should strengthen your relationship with your dog while significantly improving your dog’s safety and reliability in real-world situations. Obedience training is one of the greatest gifts you can give your dog—and yourself.
Advanced Dog Training Programs
A strong foundation in obedience is also essential for dogs that will eventually advance to specialized training programs. Before a dog can succeed in Personal Protection Dog Training, it must first demonstrate reliable obedience, focus, confidence, and control both on and off leash.
Professionally Training Dogs Since 1986
Why Thousands of Dog Owners Choose Toronto K9 Center
Since 1986, Master Dog Trainer Roger Richards has been professionally training dogs of all breeds, temperaments, and working abilities. In 1988, he founded Toronto K9 Center, where thousands of dogs and their owners have learned to build stronger relationships through reliable obedience training and proven real-world techniques.
Roger’s experience extends far beyond teaching basic commands. Throughout his career, he has successfully trained family companions, puppies, working dogs, police dogs, personal protection dogs, and dogs with behavioural challenges. Earlier in his career, he also trained specialized detection dogs, including narcotics detection dogs, before focusing his full attention on Toronto K9 Center and its growing client base. Every dog is evaluated individually, allowing each training program to be tailored to the dog’s temperament, confidence, learning style, and the owner’s goals.
Rather than using a one-size-fits-all approach, Toronto K9 Center focuses on practical, results-driven training that produces dogs that are calm, confident, and dependable both at home and in public. Our goal is to help owners develop lasting communication and trust with their dogs while building obedience that continues long after training is complete.
Roger’s expertise has earned recognition beyond Canada. In 2026, he was invited to conduct an international dog training seminar in the Philippines, sharing his knowledge of obedience training, behaviour, personal protection dogs, and advanced working dog techniques. His reputation has been built on decades of proven results, professional integrity, and a genuine passion for helping both dogs and their owners succeed.
Whether you’re raising a new puppy, improving your dog’s obedience, addressing behavioural issues, or preparing for advanced working or protection training, Toronto K9 Center has the experience, knowledge, and proven methods to help you achieve lasting success.

Four Dog Training Programs
At Toronto K9 Center there are 4 options when it comes to Obedience Training.
Private Dog Training Options
This course can be held at the Client’s home, a Preferred location, or Toronto K9’s Training Center.
Train in the Comfort of Your Home
Private at-home training is when the training director, Roger Richards, goes to the Client’s home or place of choice, where you and he feel comfortable and safe, and works one-on-one with the Client and their dog. In this Program, the Basic Obedience commands needed to control any dog, regardless of size or breed, are taught.
What are the 6 basic obedience commands for dogs?
The 6 Basic Obedience Commands are Heel, Sit, Sit, and Stay Down, Down and Stay, and Come when asked.
All of these commands are taught on a leash. Behaviour modification is also addressed, including no jumping and mouthing. This allows the entire family to participate in the training of their dog.
This training program is highly successful because we go to your home and provide humane, natural methods to train your dog. Since we come to you and your dog, we can create a custom plan for puppy or adult dog training that takes into account your dog’s temperament, personality, and energy level.
Train at Our Whitby Facility
Private training at our facility follows the same regimen as at-Home Training. The course follows the same structure and covers the same commands and behavior training, except it is all done at our facility instead of at your home.
Board and Train (Boot Camp)
Please note that there is always a waiting list for this program.
Bootcamp training requires the owner to leave their dog boarded with us for a month. Note that in Inboard, Bootcamp training all dogs stay at our home and not at a kennel. All formal obedience commands, correct socialization techniques and behavior problems are dealt with in this program, regardless of size or breed. These commands include; heel, sit, sit and stay, down, down and stay, and come when called. All of these commands are taught on a leash. Also, behavior modification is dealt with, this including, no jumping and mouthing. Your dog will benefit because he receives intense one-on-one training designed specifically for your dog, based on his personality and temperament. Dogs are properly fed, exercised and attended to. If you have any personal considerations in regard to diet, care, etc., we will be happy to accommodate you. We also greatly encourage you to visit your dog to monitor his progress and to learn the techniques being taught so you would know the correct procedures to maintain your dog’s training when he returns home.
At the end of the one month program, the dog goes back to its owner. Once the dog is back home with its owner and if the owner feels that they themselves may need some extra coaching, we have that covered. If required, we include six Private, One-on-One classes with one of our trainers, free of charge to the owner. These private classes are held once a week at Toronto K9 Centre’s facility.
Group Dog Training Classes
For Puppies and Adult Dogs
Held at Toronto K9 Center’s facility or other specified locations!
Our Group Classes course is a sixteen-week program. For this program, the dog and its owner or handler attend classes once a week for 16 weeks at a Toronto K9 Center facility. This sixteen-week program offers the same curriculum as our Board and Train BootCamp program, except without the socialization training portion. All formal obedience commands are taught. These include heel, sit, sit and stay, down, down and stay, and come when called. All of these commands are taught to dogs while they are on a leash. Also, behavior modification is dealt with, including no jumping or mouthing.
We firmly believe that the most effective Group Classes are sixteen-week programs, NOT the eight-week programs commonly offered by other trainers. Consistency is of paramount importance in dog training. We strongly encourage you to attend all training classes if possible.
